Researchers know that in the brain, the neurotransmitter dopamine accelerates -synuclein aggregation, especially when it is oxidized into dopamine quinone. When oxygen is unavailable, some gut bacteria can use nitrate as an alternative electron acceptor for cellular respiration, generating nitrite.
